Anambra Community Raises The Alarm As Police Arrest 29 Youths

Chairman of Okpuno Umuogali Oba community, Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State, Chief Christian Ogoegbunam Igwilo, has accused the police of invading and arresting his subjects, 29 youths, based on frame up charges.

Recall that in the early hours of Tuesday, a combined team of police and local vigilante group, stormed the said community and arrested 29 youths said to be criminal/cultists suspects and taken to Oraifite Police Area Command.

Items allegedly recovered from them included, one pump action gun, two satchets of substance suspected to be Indian hemp, one axe, one military boot, 26 cartridges, one military helmet,13 cutlasses, two hammers,13 GSM phones and cash of N45,000.

In a swift reaction, the chairman of the community, Chief Ogoegbunam hinted that it was a deliberate attempt by one or two people in the community to cause chaos in a bid to stop the current opposition against the imposed youth chairman of the community, Amobichukwu Ibeto,

“I condemn in strong terms the storming of our community by the police to arrest some youths based on frame up charges that may have emanated from one or two people who spareheaded the imposition of Amobi Ibeto as the youth chairman.

“This is a case of improper election among the youths and we are deliberating on it when suddenly one or two people who imposed their stooge, Ibeto, as chairman brought in the police to frustrate and refocus attention on the imposition.

” I dont have pre knowledge of the raid as the chairman of the community and It is election of the youths that caused this problem as some kicked against the imposition.”

Also reacting, the President of Aboji Akanano Union Oba, Nze Dozie Nweke, condemned the invation adding, “I heard so many doors, flats and rooms were broken and property estimated into millions of naira damaged.

“This is a case of youth election that did not go down well with some youths that were told that the election has been postponed because of COVID-19 but later a kangaroo election was reportedly conducted in which one Amobichukwu Ibeto, was improperly elected.

“That should not have amounted to police coming to the place to damage the property of the people and those arrested being labeled armed robbers /cultists . Among those arrested were the former youth chairman of the co mmunity and his two siblings including a pastor and other”

The regent of Oba community, Prince Noel Ezenwa, was said to have also condemned the police raid and arrest describing it as uncalled for.
