Anambra community protests building of Secretariat on access road

By: Awesome Ekene

Landlords and tenants of Ihionu Street Ozalla Layout Obosi Urban in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday protested alleged building of a Secretariat on an access road by leadership of Ozalla Landlord Association.

Ihionu Street is one of the over hundred streets and roads, that make up Ozalla Layout Obosi Urban, it is linked with popular Ezeiweka Road, Awada, and Oraifite, Urum and Osumenyi Streets all in Obosi and shares boundary with Anambra State Broadcasting Service, ABS, Radio and Television.

Addressing reporters on behalf of the Chairman, landlords and tenants of Udokamna Zone Ozalla Landlords Association, landlord of the aggrieved Ihionu Street residents, Chief Kelvin Nnandi, said there was no prior information to landlords and tenants of Ihionu street, before President General of Ozalla Landlords Association came up with the project.

He wondered reason behind the choice of the particular street that had only one entry and exit point to site the Secretariat despite the over 100 roads, open land and spaces scattered in Ozalla Layout Obosi Urban.

He said, “We woke up Tuesday morning and saw people digging foundation at the entry into Ihionu Street, from Urum and Oraifite streets end while many residents have traveled home for Christmas and New Year.

“When we inquired to know what the foundation is for, they immediately called the President General of Ozalla Landlords Association, who came and told us that he want to build a Secretariat for the association.

“Amidst heated argument, he called some boys who claimed to be Obosi boys to intimidate us. But we insisted the road belongs to government and was gazetted before the landlords on the street started building their houses.

“If we allow the project what it means is that we have only entry road to our street, without out any exit and if there is an emergency, like during fire outbreak, there is no way fire fighters can come into the street, if the only entry road, which is Ezeiweka road is blocked.

“This is an illegal project, no State or Local Government will approve building an associations Secretariat to block the road into a street, it is not done anywhere, unions or associations Secretariat are build on lands purchased by them not on the street road to prevent people from using their government designed road.

“If an association with over 100 roads and streets residents as members wants to build a Secretariat, they look for land to buy for such project, not coming to block a street road, which the consequences will be suffered by the residents of the street.

Efforts to speak with the President General of Ozalla Landlords Association, Mr Esiotu, were unsuccessful as he did not pick calls to his phone or responded to text messages sent to him.

However, traditional ruler of Obosi, Igwe Chidubem Iweka said he was unaware of such controversial project in his domain, as he was yet to be informed by those for or against the project.

“I will send my Secretary to go to Ozalla Layout to find out what is happening there. I know that one Emeka Esiotu is the PG there, why will he not tell me if he is carrying out such a project there, if there is any breakdown of law and order there now, I will be the one to be called,” he queried.
