Three suspected land grabbers were reportedly arrested in connection with the alleged murder of one Chidozie Ejike at Ezinkwelle village, Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Oyi local Government Area of Anambra state.
Scores of persons were said to have been macheted on the fateful day, including one Ikechukwu Agbata and the Caretaker Committee chairman of Nkwelle-Ezunaka community, Chief Wilfred Okafor, who narrowly escaped death by the whiskers.
Reacting to the alleged invasion and murder, the caretaker chairman, Okafor, said that “we are happy with the zone 13 police command arrest of three out of about 100 of those land grabbers who call themselves estate agents, more should be arrested, they are our major problem, they want to take over our community.
“They are the ones formenting trouble in the community. They will collaborate with some youths of the community, pay them money to fight their own people.
“They boasted they have about 91 estates and that if they contribute #10,000 each, they will eliminate me and they have started their evil plot by murdering our son and relation, Chidozie Ejike on 29th August (early Sunday morning)”
“I was the target to be killed on that fateful day because they came through the back, to my house instead of the major road but were repelled by the Ezinkwelle vigilante group from heading to my house to kill me and set my house ablaze for opposing their bid to grab Edoma land which we have part of it in common with Nwobia family in Amuche village.
“Already we have land tuzzle with Merry land estate and the leadership has been boasting to kill me and on that fateful day they carried out their threat and are ready to do more”
“If not that l pleaded to the youths they would have revenged the murder because what they don’t like is intimidation. They are not aggressive, they are responsible, hardworking youths who are engaged in one trade or the other. They have language that they understand and once I speak to them in that language they obey me.”
Okafor expressed optimism that justice would be given to the invasion now that the matter is before the police hinting that his door is always open for dialogue as the only better means of settling matters instead of confrontation.
A senior police officer at the Zone 13 Police Command who pleaded anonymity confirmed the arrest, saying investigation was ongoing.
