Alleged Kidnapping: Police Arrests Traditional Monarch, Pastor In Imo

Eze Andrew Okuegbunuwa, the traditional ruler of Obor Community in Awara, Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, and one Pastor Caleb Agu, have been arrested by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Imo State Police Command for alleged kidnapping.

Parading the traditional ruler and 8 other suspected members of his gang at the command headquarters in Owerri, the state Commissioner of Police, Isaac Akinmoyede, said they masterminded the death of 2 personnel of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in the state few months ago.

The CP said while the traditional ruler allegedly provided the gang’s operational vehicle, the cleric was the gang leader.

He stated that police operatives recovered N4.2million, which formed part of the ransom allegedly collected from one of their victims recently.

Items recovered by the police consists, four AK-47 rifles, one rifle belonging to the slain NDLEA officers, 120 rounds of live ammunition, one Lexus SUV, and other exhibits were recovered from the suspects.

The commissioner further disclosed that the gang gave the monarch N3m from the over N7m received as ransom in one of their operations.

He noted, “On July 28, at Umuokuzu Awara in Ohaji/Egbema LGA of Imo State, SARS operatives through painstaking and diligent investigation arrested one Eze Andrew Okuegbunuwa, 59, of Obor community in Awara, Oguta LGA, Imo State, in connection with kidnappings and other armed robbery incidents.

“Investigations further revealed that the suspect provided the operational vehicle, Lexus RX 330 with number plate, URM 404 EL, for the kidnappers.

“Having lost the vehicle in an operation, the monarch was given the sum of N3m to replace his vehicle by the kidnappers. It was further disclosed that the vehicle was not registered, as there is no record of it in the Federal Road Safety Corps database.”

While answering questions, the traditional ruler accepted that besides the N3million he received from the gang, he had been collecting money from them every time they returned from an operation.

He also acknowledged that his vehicles were being used for the kidnap operations.

Some other arrested suspects are Uzoma Bernard,65; Fabian Obioha,60; Ogechi Obioha,30; Kennedy Okwuonu,40; Ebenezer Obioha,38; and Ikechukwu Njoku,32.
