It was celebration galore Sunday following the return and reuniting of a 5-year old girl with family after seven months disappearance from her school in Awka, Awka South local government area of Anambra state.
The victim, simply identified as Mercy was last seen by her parents November last year after she was allegedly abducted from her school.
It was gathered that the mother of the victim had immediately reported the matter to the police after she waited for her daughter’s return to no avail.
She was said to have accosted the teachers who feigned ignorance of the daughter’s whereabouts, a response that hieghtened her anger.
Her visits to prayer houses in desperate search for the return of the daughter, reportedly aggravated the situation as some of them had revealed to her that her daughter had been used for rituals.
Providence however smiled at her that fateful Sunday when her daughter was sighted at Okpuno, a community in Awka North Local Government Area with a woman said to have allegedly adopted her.
A friend to the victim’s family said to have sighted the girl in company of the woman who claimed to have adopted her from a motherless babies home while she lived in Ogidi area of the state raised alarm which led to the rescue of the girl as well as arrest of the woman.
“We were on our way to church when my daughter called my attention to the girl, “Daddy, is that not Mercy that woman is holding,?”
“I quickly stopped, alighted from the car and accosted the woman who could not give satisfactory explanation of who the girl is. That was how she was rounded up,” the man narrrated.
The DAILY VENDOR gathered that the suspect, a retired teacher is currently at the Central Police station, Awka providing useful information to the police, while the victim had since been re-united with her family.
“The woman said she adopted the baby from a motherless babies home after paying N2million. But we are carrying out thorough investigation into the matter,” a police source said.
