A 15-year old class IX girl was reportedly gang raped around the Sonarpur Police station area, near Kolkata in 2015. Three suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.
The girl’s family had lodged an FIR against the three youths, all residents of her locality, following which they were arrested.
Judge Umesh Singh of the Alipore Special Pokso Court on Monday convicted them all. The sentence against the perpetrators will be announced on Tuesday.
According to court sources, the three arrested youths are Sujoy Chattopadhyay, Raju Das and Surjit Sardar. Another accused in the case, a minor, is currently on trial at the Juvenile Justice Board.
Police said the three youths had been in jail custody since their arrest. The court rejected their bail pleas more than once. The three youths broke down in tears on hearing that they had been convicted by the court. They were later taken to the Presidency Jail under heavy police guard.
Madhabi Ghosh, special public prosecutor in the case, said the gang-rape took place in 2015 in the Sonarpur police station area of South 24 Parganas. The 15-year-old student was going to study tuition in the evening on the day of the incident. Then tuition teacher Sujoy Chatterjee met her on the way and told the student to go to a house with him. The student went to the house with him in good faith. There, the criminals gang-raped her by pressing her face and hands and feet.
The Daily Vendor Newspaper learnt that the whole incident was videotaped. She was threatened that if she confessed to the incident, the whole video would be spread on social media and her reputation would be tarnished.
The student fell ill after the incident. People gathered at her house and she was taken to a local hospital for treatment. After the incident, on the basis of a written complaint lodged at Sonarpur police station, the police launched an investigation and arrested the accused one after the other.
The student also submitted a confidential statement to a judicial magistrate. Besides, her medico-legal was also ordered by the court.
The rapist should be awarded the highest degree of punishment – “the death sentence” locals insist.
