PESHAWAR: Rioters in their numbers on Sunday, November 22, set ablaze house and office of journalists Rehan Khan and Muhammad Baloch as the Kurram dispute crisis took a dangerous turn.
The Daily Vendor reports that the affected journalists have demanded of the government to provide them quick justice with appropriate compensation.
Muhammad Baloch and Rehan from Kurram district have earned a reputation as a fearless and dedicated journalists since they decided to raise voice for the Voiceless People.
With a career spanning over two decades, they have played a pivotal role in highlighting the plight of tribal communities, shedding light on their struggles and challenges.
“My office situated in Bagan Bazaar is set ablaze by riots on November 22 when hundreds of other shops, offices and houses were set on fire,” said Baloch. He said his colleague Rehan Khan houses was also changed into ashes by people who destroyed the whole Bagan Bazaar.
Born in the home of Haji Shafi-uz-Zaman in Kurram district, Baloch began his journalistic journey in 2003 with the daily newspaper Pakistan Islamabad. In 2004, he joined the Asian News Network (ANN), where he honed his skills and developed a deeper understanding of the issues faced by his community.
Since 2009, he has been affiliated with Dunya News Channel, where his bold and insightful reporting has brought national attention to the region’s pressing concerns.
Baloch unwavering commitment to giving a voice to the marginalized has earned him recognition and acclaim. In 2010, he received the Best TV journalist Award from in ex-Fata, acknowledging his exceptional work in presenting the untold stories of tribal life.
Despite facing immense challenges, including death threats and other risks associated with reporting in conflict-prone areas, Baloch and Rehan continued to pursue truth with courage and determination. The humility and compassionate nature have not only earned them respect among their colleagues but have also made them beloved figures within the communities they represent.
A humanitarian at heart, Baloch’s decision to pursue journalism was fueled by his desire to bring the struggles of tribal people to the forefront. His fearless reporting and dedication to justice have made him a beacon of hope for many, serving as an inspiration for journalists in similar circumstances.
Baloch hails from the Orakzai tribe, specifically the Zaimusht Watizi clan. His leadership abilities were further recognized when he was elected Vice President of the Tribal Union of Journalists ex-Fata in 2012, where he worked tirelessly to advocate for the rights and safety of journalists working in volatile regions.
Academically,Rehan has master degree in Journalism from Peshawar University while Baloch has a strong foundation in journalism. After completing his matriculation from Government Comprehensive High School Kohat and FSc from Postgraduate College Abbottabad, Baloch graduated with a BA in Journalism from the University of Peshawar.
Muhammad Baloch and Rehan continued to report fearlessly from the front lines, providing a platform for the voiceless and bringing critical issues to the attention of the world. Muhammad Baloch, a senior journalist from Lower Kurram faced a devastating attack on his office. The incident caused significant losses, with valuable equipment, including a laptop, two high-quality cameras, important documents, and records, being completely destroyed by fire.While Rehan house had been completely destroyed in the incident.
The journalists have appealed for immediate attention from key officials, including Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, DG ISPR, Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur, Corps Commander Peshawar, GOC 9th Division, Commandant Thall Scouts, 33rd Brigade, and DC Kurram Javed Ullah Mehsud.
Muhammad Baloch and Rehan have urged these authorities to take notice of the incident and ensure justice is served.
