Collection of brooms, cutlasses in Anambra schools still illegal – Commissioner

Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s ban on collection of brooms and cutlasses from school children is still in force in Anambra State, Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh has restated.

Chuma-Udeh stated this while responding to certain issues raised by Principals during the just concluded Principal’s retreat.

“As schools resume and compounds overgrown by weeds, may it please Madam Commissioner to grant us permission to collect brooms and cutlasses to clear the compound” the Principals appealed.

“Mr Governor has placed a ban on collection of brooms and cutlasses in line with the free education policy.

“A child assigned to clear any part of the school compound shall come with brooms and cutlasses from home and goes back with them after the assignment” the Commissioner responded.

Chuma-Udeh also directed the early exposure of school children to practical agriculture as a means of managing the the current food challenge.

She however warned that such arrangement should be organized in a manner that would not disrupt academic activities.
