National Youth Service (NYSC) in Anambra State has charged Corps Members to key into digital literacy to empower the youth in their host communities.
State Coordinator, Blessing Ekene Iruma gave the advice during a debate on “Digital Literacy in the 21st Century, an Essential Ingredient for Inclusive Governance and Effective Leadership” at the NYSC Orientation Camp organised by Mind the Gap Initiative for 2024 Batch B stream 11 Corps Members.
She enumerated the benefits of digital literacy to include creativity, communication, adaptability, cyber security, skill development, digital equity, increasing efficiency, enhancing employability, access to information and collaboration facilitation.
Presenting the star prize to number 3 platoon, the Coordinator appreciated the debaters for their brilliant performances.
The event which involved 20 participants; two from each of the ten platoons, was aimed at exploring the significance of digital literacy in promoting inclusive governance and effective leadership.
With no opposing or proposing sides, the debate encouraged open-mindedness and the exploration of various perspectives.
The contestants defined key terms such as Digital, Literacy, Governance, and Effective Leadership, setting the stage for a thought-provoking discussion.
After a rigorous debate, Platoon 3 emerged first position with 470 points, winning a cash prize of N30,000.
Platoon 6 took second position with 452 points, winning N20,000, while Platoon 8 came third with 457 points, winning N10,000.
Platoon 6 also produced the Best Speaker, which received a cash prize of N5,000.
The awards were given, according to the Chief Judge, Mr Chuks Odiga, based on the criteria of effectively communicating ideas, convincing the audience, explaining points clearly as well as relating the points to the Nigeria’s contemporary experience.
