Anambra State Disability Rights Commission has appreciated Governor Chukwuma Soludo for creating an independent budget line for the Commission.
Chairman, Barr. Chuks Ezewuzie stated this during a media briefing on the outcome of the quarterly meeting of the Commission which was established in accordance with section three of the State Disability Rights law, 2018, as one stop shop for all disability services and related matters in the State.
He also thanked Pat Okeke, another member of the Commission and wife of Chief Godwin Okeke who built and donated two classroom and hostel blocks to central school which is a special school for the deaf at Odakpu, Onitsha.
He further appreciated the Rule of Law and Anti Corruption programme for sponsoring accessibility audit research of Ministries, Departments and Agencies in Anambra, which the result is now yielding positive results.
According to Ezewuzie, the commission deliberated on series of disability issues and adopted two important action plans, which are to set up persons living with disability fund and appointment of the commission’s liaison officers in the 21 local government areas of the state, 179 communities and 326 electoral wards in Anambra, to oversee the welfare of their members in the state.
He further disclosed that the persons living with disabilities fund as stipulated by section sixteen of the Anambra State Disability Rights law, 2018 has Bishop Moses Ezedebego, a member of the Commission as Chairman of the fund raising committee to actualize the plan.
“In order to pull persons living with disability out of poverty, we are going to establish “Access Market Pavilion”, cooperative society for our members, credit facilities for entrepreneurs with disabilities, trade fair for merchants and skilled persons living with disabilities, among numerous others.
“Our membership have benefited from Mandela Washington Fellowship for young African leaders as Miss Vivian Ezeonwumelu, the chairman’s social media secretary and Chidimma Anajemba, the commission’s Public Relations Officer have traveled to the United States of America on a six week leadership programme of the fellowship, sponsored by the government of the United States,” he added.
