The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has commenced demolition of shanties and illegal structures defacing the Anambra state capital and its environs in efforts to enhance their aesthetic and environmental standards.
The exercise carried out at Ifite Awka, included removal of illegal shanties and structures constructed under high tension, power lines and in close proximity to residential buildings to provide safer environment for residents.
Addressing residents, Head of ACTDA Development Control Unit, Mr. Charles Ekwunife urged the affected individuals to construct standard buildings in safer locations, ensuring compliance with urban development regulations and contributing to a safer, more organized Awka.
He noted that prior to the demolition, ACTDA had repeatedly notified shop owners to desist from erecting buildings in these hazardous areas, but regretted that despite these warnings, numerous structures remained, prompting the current demolition exercise.
While disclosing that the cleared space was intended for proposed establishment of pipeborne water system, which would serve the community’s needs, Ekwunife insisted that ACTDA was paving way for improved infrastructure and better quality of life for Awka residents.
