The Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (AANFE) has donated instructional materials to Onitsha Correctional Center, Anambra State to support the rehabilitation and educational programs for inmates.

The materials included textbooks, exercise books, whiteboards, markers, and other items to facilitate the teaching and learning process.

Presenting the items to the facility officials, AANFE Director, Mrs. Ebele Ononiuhu said the gesture was in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s bid to promote literacy and learning opportunities for all, regardless of background or circumstances.

She described education as a powerful tool for personal growth and development, which has a transformative effect on the lives of inmates.

“We are therefore honored to support the educational efforts of the correctional centers and to provide these resources to inmates,” she said.

Ononiuhu thanked Governor Soludo and Education Commissioner, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, for their relentless efforts in ensuring that adult education stands the test of time.

“We are grateful to the Anambra State Government and the Education Commissioner for their support in our mission to empower through education the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.

“The visitation and donation of the items are part of the Agency’s show of concern and assurance to the inmates that there is still hope for them even after their incarceration,” she stated.

Responding, Deputy Controller of Correctional Center, Mr. S.A. Igwe, expressed gratitude to AANFE and State Government for the donation and promised that the items would be utilized effectively.

He also appealed to government to approve the center’s request for secondary education, which would enable the center to provide more comprehensive educational programs for its inmates.

Speaking on behalf of the inmates, one of them thanked AANFE for the visit and donation of teaching materials.

“I never thought we would have the chance to learn and grow again. Thank you, Anambra State Government, for believing in us and giving us a second chance. Your visit and donation have given us hope for a better future,” he said.
