The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has demolished a criminal hideout and illicit drug hub in Agu-Awka, along Enugu-Onitsha old road, Anambra State.
Addressing reporters in Awka, Head of Awka Capital Territory Development Control Unit, Mr. Charles Ekwunife said the move followed increase of drug peddlers and criminals within the area known as the “shanty town”
He noted that the intervention was targeted at addressing the rapid expansion of the said criminal hideout and curb the illicit activities that had taken root in the area.
He regretted that the illegal occupants persisted, despite previous warnings, compelling the necessity for a comprehensive response.
He added that the intervention reinforced the importance of swift and resolute actions in maintaining the safety and well-being of urban spaces.
He said, “ACTDA Enforcement Team successfully demolished the premises of illegal occupant in “shanty town”, revealing a substantial stock of various illicit drugs, and ensuring the evacuation of all residents.
“The demolition not only signifies a crucial step towards restoring sanity and order in the capital city but also reflects the proactive measures taken by ACTDA to address pressing community concerns.”
Residents who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity, expressed satisfaction with ACTDA’s actions, commending the authority for restoring sanity in the state.
The visibly excited residents, said the intervention had brought joy and relief to them, underscoring the persistent challenges posed by the criminal hub.
They thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo for coming to their rescue, recounting instances of robbery, house burglary, and unchecked invasion by cows in their vicinity.
