The Eight days peaceful protest by Itsekiri sons and daughters, (Itsekiri General Assembly) over the non implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act ( PIA) has been suspended.
The protest which led to blocking the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Commission ( DESOPADEC ) office was called off by the Ologbotsere of Warri kingdom, Chief (Engr)Oma Eyewuoma on the directive of the Olu of Warri Ogiame Atuwatse III
The peaceful protest by the Itsekiri sons and daughters worldwide began at NUPRC, NNPC Zonal Office Warri for the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), then proceeded to DESOPADEC where a catafalque was used to block the gate and an interdenominational service was held at the premises had been suspended.
However , before the suspension today Tuesday 12 September 2023, the protesters who were seen displaying different placards,called for accountability demanded for the Itsekiri Nation entitlement from the era of the former governor of the state, Chief James Ibori.
Chief Omolubi Nenewumi.who spoke on behalf of the Ologbotsere, Chief (Engr) Oma Eyewuoma said, the protest was suspended based on the intervention by the state Governor, ,His Excellency,.Rt.Hon, Sherrif Oborevwori.and also the Olu of Warri, His Majesty,Ogiame Atuwatse III.
He said, the Itsekiri nation hold their monarch in high esteem and whatever pronouncement from him is final and they cannot contravene his decisions hence, they have to vacate the premises because the king’s proclamation is law.
Chief Eyewuoma called on the state Government to endeavour to pay the benefits of Iwere land into an authorized Iwere account and not to any individual or group of people.
He emphasized that, all Oil Producing Producing Areas in the state should get what is rightfully theirs.
Amongst those present today were the Ologbotsere,Chief Oma Eyewuoma, Edegbe of Warri , Chief Francis Omatsheye, Chief Omolubi Nenewumi, the Iye of Warri, Chief Mrs Esther Okotie-Eboh and other important sons and daughters of Iwere land.
They promised to begin the strike anytime without notice if their demands were not met.
