Landslide threatens Anambra School

Residents of Nnobi in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State have raised the alarm over devastating gully erosion in the area

They said the erosion which has cut off the Nnobi-Nkpor road, might likely swallow classroom block in Nnobi High School if no urgent intervention is taken.

A stakeholder in the area, Sir Obiora Okpala regretted daily expansion of the gully, causing rapid downward movement of a mass of rock, earth and sloping towards the school.

He added that the road has finally cut-off completely, calling on relevant authorities to declare state of emergency on the road.

He said, “After I made a video that went viral on the early hours of Saturday 2nd September which I’m sure got to the Governor, he visited the site on Wednesday 6th September and promised immediate Mobilisation of Works to the sight.

“As at yesterday 12th September after series of downpour over the days, the gully finally cut off the road.

“My worries now is that about 16 feet to that road is one of the junior student’s classroom block of Nnobi High School. Any further devastation of the gully across the land will cut the classroom block into two.

“I call on those close to the governor to urge him to come and assist the good people of Nnobi.

“The road is a short cut to most commercial commuters heading to parts of Abia and Akwa Ibom states from the commercial city of Onitsha.

“The road is also the major gateway to semi urban city of Ekwulobia. It’s a multipurpose commercial route; it needs urgent Intervention.”
