Traffic offences: Soludo slashes 50,000 “one-way” violation fine to 5,000

The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has announced a N5,000 flat reduction of all fines payable by traffic offenders in the State.

 He said the new rate takes effect from September 5, 2023.

Traffic violators had earlier paid varying penalty fees for different offences, including driving against traffic which was fixed at N50,000.

Speaking during his quarterly chat with people of the state ABS, Soludo said the decision was to ease challenges faced by motoring public pending when all the roads were completely marked to enable road users know exactly what was obtainable and the punishment involved.

The Governor who was responding to issues regarding the activities of Anambra State Road Traffic Agency, explained that the agency was designed for law and order on state roads.

 He said, “The N5000 fine which will take effect from Tuesday, is to ease the challenges people face pending when all the roads are completely marked to enable road users know exactly what is obtainable and the punishment involved.

“The official amount for each offense will be made public at that time and the payment system as well, to avoid unlawful extortion of motorists and warned against paying cash to anyone.

According to the Governor, the system would ensure zero tolerance for bribery and warned that any officer caught will be seriously delt with.

He emphasized that government is about making life seamless for the people and not otherwise and promised adequate training and retraining of ATMA officers for effective service delivery.

“Government is aware that people pay different amounts as fine, depending on the offense committed. The N5,000 flat rate will help reduce misunderstanding.

While lauding ATMA officials for their commitment towards ensuring free flow of traffic on Anambra roads, Soludo advised people of the state to always be law abiding.

The Governor further announced an upcoming legislation targeted at ending touting in the State, warning those involved in touting to desist forthwith or face the consequences.
