Rent increment: Landlady pours hot water mixed with pepper on tenant in Anambra

A middle-aged woman identified as Amaka Okonkwo has been arrested for allegedly pouring hot water mixed with pepper on tenant over rent increment in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.

According to the victim, Imabong William, from Akwaibom, the landlady had demanded she vacated the apartment over her inability to pay the new rent increment after expiration of her rent last month. 

“I asked her to give me some time to enable me get a new place, but she refused. While I was washing my clothes on Thursday, she came from behind and poured hot water mixed with pepper on me.

Husband of the suspect, Ebere Okonkwo absolved the wife of the allegations. 

“Although I was at home that day, I was not aware of my wife’s wicked intentions towards our tenant,” he said.

It was gathered that arrested suspect is boasting of walking scot free from the police net.

Reacting, the women and social welfare Commissioner, Hon Ify Obinabo said the victim is currently receiving treatment at Zion hospital Nawfia, while the suspect is at the Nimo police station.

The Commissioner who spoke through her aide, Chidinma Ikeanyionwu expressed displeasure over the incident, promising to get justice for the victim.

Appreciating Enugwu-Ukwu Women for their timely intervention towards arresting the suspect, Obinabo adviced the public to always report any form of crimes to the appropriate channels for quick intervention.

“The state government will not take lightly anyone found culpable of assault of any kind,” she said.

On her part, Woman President General of the community, Lady Chiegbunam Nwosu and Mrs Florence Okoye thanked government for responding to their call, stressing that the community is not in support of the dastardly act.

The group also visited Nimo police division where the DPO assured of transferring the case to the state Cid for onward investigation and consequent peace and order in the community.
