The Anambra State Police Command has halted desilting of drainages at Ohanugo field, Onitsha South Local Government Area, as ordered by the governor.

The Daily Vendor gathered that the Onitsha Area Commander, Mr. Kaila, sent his police team to stop the ongoing desilting/clearing of blocked drainage channels and the demolition of illegal and encroached structures in the said area.

According to sources, the halting of the desilting might have been influenced by a business magnate who reportedly owns plots of land at Ohanugo field, Creek Road, Fegge Onitsha.

The Police team, on arrival at the scene, reportedly arrested the excavator machine operator, stopped the workers from continuing their demolition, disilting/clearing and evacuation exercise.

The Onitsha South caretaker commitee chairman, Hon. Emeka Orji, was said to be out of town as at the time the incident occurred, but was on a tip-off told of the development.

According to the sources, Orji put a call across to the Onitsha Area Commander for his team to discontinue with the work but to no avail.

The chairman was however, said to have vowed to continue the demolition despite the police intervention adding that the Governor’s order to continue the demolition exercise remains.

Confirming the incident when contacted, Onitsha Police Area Commander, Mr. Kaila  (ACP), referred our correspondent to the State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga, (DSP), for details.

Calls put across to him, Ikenga, were not picked as at the time of filing this report.
