2023 Presidency: Buhari Differs From Mamman Daura, Distances Self From Nephew’s Comment On Zoning

The presidency has distanced itself from Mamman Daura’s remarks in which he kicked against the adoption of rotational presidency in the country come 2023.

Daura, while speaking with BBC Hausa on Tuesday, July 28, 2020, had said that the 2023 presidency should be based on competence and qualification, not on tribe and regional interest.

According to him, Nigeria needs to make a bold paradigm shift away from the fruitless status quo.

However, the presidency, in a statemet by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said the opinion expressed by Daura were personal.

Shehu maintained that Daura’s view did not in any way reflect the mind of President Buhari nor that of his administration.

He noted: “It is important that we state from the onset that as mentioned by the interviewee, the views expressed were personal to him and did not, in any way, reflect that of either the President or his administration.”

The presidential spokesman further said that Daura was entitled to his own views on matters and need not seek authorization to speak so.

Shehu further opined that the English translation of the interview, which was conducted in Hausa did not reflect Daura’s actual intentions, insisting that the context was mixed and his words blown out of proportion.
