A group, Igbos For Progressive And United Nationhood (IPAN) has expressed worry over what it termed unseriousness of Igbo politicians towards contesting the office of the President in 2023.
The group also regretted the beggerly disposition of certain elders of the zone to the exalted position, reminding them that the presidency would not be handed over to Ndigbo on a platter of gold.
Addressing newsmen on Saturday in Awka, Anambra State, National President of the group, Comrade Lawrence Onuzulike said 2023 remained the biggest opportunity for Nigerian president of Igbo extraction to emerge.
He called on potential Igbo aspirants in the major political parties to wake up and put themselves in contention for the presidential tickets in their parties.
He said, “As the nation is about to enter into 2022, a crucial year in the race for the 2023 general elections, IPAN notes that there is no real momentum by any Igbo politician interested in running for president in 2023.
“While potential aspirants from other regions are making serious moves in preparation for the presidential race, no Igbo aspirant has shown real seriousness or intention to vie for the office of the President in 2023.
“What we see are watery statements from some individuals and groups insisting on Igbo presidency in 2023. To be clear, IPAN strongly believes that 2023 presents the biggest opportunity yet for a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction to emerge.
“It is obvious that the presidency will not be handed over to Ndigbo a platter of gold. We must strive to get it through deliberate and strategic moves and alliances.
“IPAN therefore calls on potential Igbo aspirants in the major political parties to wake up and put themselves in contention for the presidential tickets in their parties.
“We must not continue to shout marginalization in leadership only to be found far away from the thick of action when there is an opportunity to offer ourselves in leadership.”
While congratulating Anambra Governor-elect, Prof. Charles Soludo on his victory at the November 6, election in Anambra State, the group pledged to work closely with him to ensure the people of the state reaped only fruits of good governance.
“IPAN believes the majority of Ndi Anambra have spoken and made their choice clear, we therefore pledge to work closely with the Governor-elect, Prof. Charles Soludo to ensure Ndi Anambra reap only fruits of good governance.”
