Sit-at-home: Onitsha residents in last minutes shopping ahead Tuesday lockdown

Residents of Onitsha and its environs defied the Monday sit-at-home order to make last minutes shopping, in preparation for the total lockdown declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) across the Southeast.

Our correspondent observed that some street shops that were shut earlier in the day, opened for customers later in the day, as well as to avoid huge losses for two consecutive days.

A trader in the commercial city, Ozoemena Ukoha said wisdom demanded they threw open their shops to enable residents stockpile so they did not run out of what to eat for the two days.

He said, “IPOB has declared a total lockdown tomorrow in solidarity with its leader and it’s obvious there won’t be vehicular movement and commercial activities.

“It’s not surprising that people rushed to make purchases against Tuesday. On our part, we decided to open our shops so we don’t incur great losses for two days.”

Another resident, Oluchi Ngenegbu said, “I have just bought one or two items from the streets to be ready for the Tuesday lockdown. That is what the period calls for, one has to obey, to save life.”

Meanwhile, markets, schools, banks, courts, shops, among others, remained shut as usual in compliance with the Ghost Monday order.
