Tears, agony in Anambra as Chimamanda Adichie loses father

Residents of Abba, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State were thrown into mourning following the death of Prof James Adichie, the father of a famous writer, Chimamanda Adichie is dead.

The son to the deceased, Okey Adichie who confirmed the incident to our correspondent in Awka, said the father died at the age of 88.

He said, “Our father, Professor J. N. Adichie, Odelora Abba, died late last night, June 10, 2020, at Chira Memorial Hospital, Awkuzu in the Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.”

Another family source said, “The family will make an official announcement about his death later in the week. Everybody is in pain now. Though he died at a ripe age of 88, no death is apainless death.”

Born in 1932 in Abba, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, Adichie was admitted at the University College Ibadan now the University of Ibadan in 1957 to read mathematics.

He graduated B.A. Mathematics of the University of London in 1960 among the top three students in a class of 13.

After graduation, he went on to lecture first at the Nigerian College of Science and Technology, Enugu, and later at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka until September 1963, when he proceeded to the University of California at Berkeley, United States of America.

He earned a PhD degree in statistics in 1966 and returned to the UNN and 10 years later, in October 1976, he was promoted a Professor of Statistics.
He retired in 1997 at UNN.
