Tension is ripe in Okpoko community in Ogbaru, near Onitsha, Anambra state over an impending violence in the community following factionalisation of vigilante groups operating in the area.
The power tussle over the election of town union executives in the community reportedly led to emergence of three groups who take orders and directives from their separate leaders.
The DAILY VENDOR gathered that one of the groups loyal to a former President General of the community, Eddy Emesinwa, who laid claims to the seat, insisted his tenure had not elapsed.
Another group was said to be taking orders from Francis Enemuo, allegedly installed by Chairman of Ogbaru local government area, Arinze Awogu while the third group was controlled by the acclaimed traditional ruler of the community, Chief Benjamin Muofunanya.
Coordinator of Ohazurume Abia, Ogbaru Chapter, Kalu Ndukwe who raised alarm yesterday, said the polarization of security outfit has heightened tension in the area and created atmosphere for impunity.
He alleged that a faction of the vigilante group recently brutalized Chiefs Raphael Agu (Commodore) and Arunsi Ukah, another stakeholders in the community for daring to challenge the operations of the faction.
He called on Governor Willie Obiano, Commissioner of Police, John Abang and Governor’s Assistant on Security, Chief Ikechukwu Aduba, CP Rtd. to prevent the impending violence in the community over the security situation.
He also called for the recognition of Muofunanya as the royal father of the community capable of enthroning lasting peace in the area and disbandment of other vigilante operatives working against his group.
