20 Critically Injured, 2 Rescued as Fire Guts Building in Lagos

A building at No 44, Adebayo Street off Ile-Ile, Ketu Alapere, behind Polaris Bank in Lagos State was engulfed by fire Thursday evening.

It was gathered that the fire started around 4pm in the building, which is opposite Delta Crown.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

It was gathered that two children were trapped in the building when the fire started but rescued by residents.

According to report, the children have been rushed to a nearby hospital.

The Director-General of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, however said 20 people were injured in the fire incident.

Oke-Osanyintolu said, “When we got to the scene, a block of flats consisting of six units was gutted by fire at No 44, Adebayo Street off Ile-Ile, Ketu Alapere, behind Polaris Bank in Lagos.

“After the rescue, we discovered five casualties while four of them were treated on the scene and another 15 victims who were severely burnt have been taken to hospital for further treatment.

“The cause of the fire is unknown as there is a power outage, but there is speculation at the scene that the fire is as a result of a gas cylinder explosion.

“Two units of the apartment were affected while the prompt response of the fire service prevented it from further spreading.”
