10 injured as driver sleeps off while driving in Awka

It was miracle at Awka on Wednesday when the fatigued driver of a fully loaded passenger bus drove into a roadside drainage, but no life was lost.

The Mitsubishi bus marked XV31EPE was fully loaded with 19 passengers as it ascended the Government House, Little Hill.

Ten people were, however, injured in the crash.

Report from the State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps stated: “At about 1150hrs yesterday 23rd December, 2020 ten People got injured in a lone serious crash involving a blue Mitsubishi L300 bus with registration number XV 31 EPE recorded opposite government house at Agu Akwa along Awka-Enugu Expressway.

“Eyewitnesses report reaching us indicates that the fatigued driver who was speeding excessively loss control and crashed into the road side drainage.

“It also involved a total of 19 people consisting of three male adults, four female adults, four male children and eight female children.

“Ten people three male adults, four female adults and three female children who sustained varying degree of injuries were rushed to Amaku Teaching Hospital and by FRSC rescue team while obstruction was cleared to ensure free flow of traffic”.

The report signed by the sector public education officer Florence N Edor said the Sector Commander Andrew A. Kumapayi wished the injured victims quick recovery and counselled motorists to desist from excessive speeding and abide by stipulated speed limits in built-up areas. (Daily Independent)
